03 – The “audio” clue

When you get some time, please take a look at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossword_abbreviations
This is an insanely long list but you will know many if not most of them already.

Today, we shall take a look at the “audio” clue. This type of clue asks you to identify the answer based on how it sounds when you say it aloud. Setters signal audio clues by using words like ‘I hear’, ‘on the radio’, ‘over the phone’, ‘to the ear’, ‘announced’ and so on.
For example,
Musical work that’s melodious to the ear (5)
The answer means ‘musical work’ and when you say it aloud, a listener might think it was ‘melodious’. The answer is SUITE which is a homonym of SWEET.
Here’s another example:
Heard no sound from the stable? (5)
The answer sounds like a ‘no’ but is actually a noise you can hear in a stable. Now the only word that fits both conditions (and is 5 letters long) is NEIGH (sounds like nay, doesn’t it?)
Here’s one for you to try on your own:
I hear Queen’s consort provides boost (6)

  1. Solution for the above clue:

The answer means ‘boost’, is 6 letters long and when said aloud, can sound like prince / king / ruler. It could also sound like the name of a queen’s husband. In this case, it is Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth. And so the answer is FILLIP.
